Is a Bali marriage recognised
in Hong Kong? Law and paperwork

Updated October 2026 · 5 min read

This is the question Hong Kong couples worry about most: if we marry in Bali, will it count back home? The answer depends on one thing: whether your wedding is legally completed under Indonesian law. This guide explains the difference between the two approaches and the documents you'll need.

First: a symbolic ceremony vs a legal registration

There are two very different ways to marry in Bali:

The key principle for recognition in Hong Kong

Under Hong Kong law, a marriage held overseas is generally recognised in Hong Kong as long as it is a valid marriage under the law of the place where it took place (here, Indonesia), and there is no need to register it again in Hong Kong. After you return, you simply notify the Immigration Department of your change in marital status.

On the other hand, if you hold only a symbolic ceremony without completing Indonesia's legal process, the marriage is not recognised in either place. It is simply a romantic celebration.

⚠️ Important: the religion requirement. For a legally binding wedding in Bali, both of you must declare one of Indonesia's recognised religions at the local civil registry: Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Catholicism or Protestant Christianity. This is a specific requirement of Indonesian law that differs from Hong Kong.

Two common approaches

Option A: register in Hong Kong, then hold the ceremony in Bali (the simplest)

Many Hong Kong couples complete their legal registration at a Hong Kong marriage registry first, get their Hong Kong marriage certificate, then fly to Bali for a romantic symbolic ceremony. This is the most secure legally and the simplest on paperwork, and the ceremony can be designed exactly as you like.

Option B: register formally in Bali (more paperwork)

If you want the marriage to take legal effect in Bali itself, you'll need to complete Indonesia's legal process, which involves more documents and certification steps.

Back in Hong Kong

If the marriage is valid in Indonesia, you do not need to register again on your return. Simply notify the Immigration Department of your change in marital status, in writing or using the specified form. If you later need to prove the marriage elsewhere, consider having the certificate apostilled for use overseas.
